Michelle Applebee serves as Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Elmhurst University, where she has taught since 2000 after completing her Ph.D. at the University of North Dakota. Recognized with the university-wide President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in her second year, she oversees departmental operations while maintaining active research and teaching responsibilities.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, University of North Dakota
Research Focus: Dr. Applebee specializes in environmental analytical chemistry, developing novel methods for water contaminant detection using thickness shear mode resonators and biological/environmental sensors. Her work extends to campus infrastructure analysis (permeable paver systems) and electronic nose technology developed during her Argonne National Laboratory sabbatical. This research bridges analytical chemistry with real-world environmental monitoring applications.
Scientific Recognition:
- Elmhurst University President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (2001-2002)
Academic Leadership: As department chair, Dr. Applebee recently managed laboratory and stockroom renovations while serving on key university committees including Academic Council, Strategic Planning Advisory Council, and Transfer Task Force. She actively mentors students as faculty advisor for the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society, demonstrating commitment to undergraduate education through courses spanning quantitative analysis, instrumentation, glassblowing, forensic chemistry, and foundational chemistry for science majors and pre-nursing students.
