Colleen Munro-Leighton is an Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Elmhurst University, where she has taught since 2012. Her research focuses on organometallic catalysis, CO₂ remediation, and green chemistry, collaborating with undergraduate students on projects such as palladium catalyst synthesis and environmentally friendly laboratory techniques. She teaches courses in inorganic, organic, and general chemistry, emphasizing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. In 2013-2014, she received the Elmhurst University President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, recognized for her innovative pedagogy and student mentorship.
Education: Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from North Carolina State University (200X), B.S. in Chemistry from Butler University (200X). Prior to Elmhurst, she held a postdoctoral position at the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill and a Visiting Assistant Professorship at Truman State University.
Her teaching philosophy emphasizes empowering students to explore their academic and career paths. In 2019, she co-developed a first-year seminar, Finding My Path: Questions, Callings, Convictions, designed to help undecided students align their values with academic and life goals. Her research lab in Schaible Science Center focuses on sustainable chemistry practices, including studies on soap chemistry and C-H bond activation.
Awards and recognition highlight her dedication to education, including her commitment to inclusive teaching practices and fostering student success across disciplines like nursing, biology, and kinesiology.
