Michelle Adams is the Henry M. Butzel Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School, where she teaches courses including First Amendment, Introduction to Constitutional Law, Race, Law, and History, and Race and the Law. She is a recipient of the 2024 L. Hart Wright Teaching Award and was named Professor of the Year by Cardozo's 2022 graduating class before joining Michigan Law.
Her research centers on race discrimination, school desegregation, affirmative action, and housing law, with particular expertise in the legal history of racial justice struggles in northern cities. Her scholarship explores the intersection of constitutional law, civil rights history, and contemporary racial justice issues, with a focus on the legacy of Brown v. Board of Education in northern contexts.
Professor Adams' recent work examines trends in school desegregation litigation, judicial approaches to racial equity, and the historical context of housing discrimination. Her scholarship demonstrates consistent engagement with both theoretical legal frameworks and practical implications for contemporary civil rights struggles, particularly regarding the limitations of judicial interventions in addressing systemic racism.
