Michele Dunleavy is a Professor of Dance at the School of Theatre, Pennsylvania State University. She has been a key figure in the university’s musical theater program since 2004 and was named the 2024-25 Penn State Laureate, an honor recognizing her contributions to the arts and humanities. Her work bridges dance, community engagement, and inclusivity.
Her research interests include choreography that explores social themes, such as the Steel Valley Rhythms project, which intertwines Pennsylvania’s industrial heritage with dance and memory. Collaborations with Krista Wilkinson (College of Health and Human Development) have advanced disability-affirmative practices in the arts, fostering communication and social skills through performance.
As Penn State Laureate, Dunleavy aims to amplify the arts’ role in community building, emphasizing accessibility and inclusivity. She has led initiatives like the For Good Troupe and served on boards for the American College Dance Association and Centre Region Down Syndrome Society. Her work has been supported by grants focused on arts education and community impact.
