Michela Carlana is an Associate Professor at Harvard Kennedy School and a Visiting Associate Professor at Università Bocconi, where she also serves as Director of LEAP (Laboratory for Effective Action in Policy). Based in Cambridge, MA, she leads education research projects focusing on immigrant students, gender dynamics in education, and educational inequality.
Her research interests span several critical areas in education economics and policy:
- Educational economics with focus on immigrant student integration
- Gender dynamics and stereotypes in educational decision-making
- Education policy evaluation, particularly regarding affirmative action and inclusion
- Digital learning interventions and online tutoring effectiveness
- Socioeconomic disparities in educational outcomes
- Crisis response in education, including refugee integration and pandemic learning loss
Dr. Carlana's recent publications reveal a consistent focus on identifying and addressing educational inequalities through rigorous empirical research. Her work often examines how implicit biases, social dynamics, and policy interventions affect student outcomes, with particular attention to vulnerable populations including immigrant students and girls in STEM fields. She has led significant research on the Tutoring Online Program (TOP) in Italy, demonstrating the effectiveness of structured online tutoring in mitigating learning gaps and improving both cognitive and non-cognitive skills.
As Director of LEAP at Bocconi University, she oversees a research laboratory dedicated to developing and evaluating evidence-based educational interventions. Her team actively recruits pre-docs and research assistants for education projects in Italy, collaborating with prominent researchers like Sule Alan, Leone Marinella, and Eliana La Ferrara. Her recent work has expanded to address urgent educational challenges such as the integration of Ukrainian refugee students into Italian schools following Russia's invasion.
