Dr. Micheal L. Shier is a Professor and Associate Dean, Academic at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Social Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship in the Human Services. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Social Welfare from the University of Pennsylvania, an MSW from the University of Calgary, and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Lethbridge.
Dr. Shier’s research focuses on optimizing social service delivery through social innovation, nonprofit leadership, and trauma-informed organizational practices. His work addresses equity, workplace safety, and for-profit market activities within nonprofit sectors. He leads initiatives such as the Certificate in Human Services Management and Leadership and directs the MSW program at the Faculty.
His research has been recognized through awards like the Early Researcher Award (2017–2022) and grants from the Government of Ontario and SSHRC. Dr. Shier collaborates with organizations to evaluate social innovation strategies and has published extensively on nonprofit dynamics, social entrepreneurship, and organizational safety.
