At Jagiellonian University, he founded the Center for Humanities Studies (CASH) in 2007 and currently chairs its Scientific Council. His academic roles are complemented by editorial board memberships at journals like Teksty Drugie and Slavic Review, and artistic direction of the International Joseph Conrad Literature Festival since 2009.
Markowski’s research focuses on literary theory, philosophy, and modernism, with major works exploring Derrida, Nietzsche, and Eastern European literature. He has authored over 30 books translated into multiple languages, including The Inscription Effect (1997) and Universal Promiscuity (2012). His translations of French philosophers like Foucault and Barthes into Polish have shaped Polish intellectual discourse.
He has received prestigious awards such as the Mistrz grant (2006–2009) and multiple Minister of Education Awards. Current projects include a two-volume study on European modernism (Abstraction and Matter and Modern Life), and a museum exhibition on Polish cultural modernization (2018).
