Michał Kurowski is a university professor at the Department of Criminal Procedure and Criminology, Faculty of Law and Administration, University of Lodz. He has held this position since October 1, 2020. Prior to this promotion, he served as an assistant professor at the same department from October 2006 to September 2020. In addition to his academic role, Professor Kurowski has been working as a prosecutor at the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Łódź since March 2019, demonstrating a unique blend of academic and practical legal expertise.
Professor Kurowski completed his law studies at the Faculty of Law and Administration, University of Lodz in 2001. He began doctoral studies at the same faculty in 2001 and earned his PhD in Law on September 22, 2006, based on his dissertation titled "Discontinuation of criminal proceedings in the Polish criminal process." On November 15, 2019, he obtained his habilitation degree (doktor habilitowany), which qualified him for his current professorship.
His scholarly work centers on critical aspects of criminal procedure with particular emphasis on preparatory proceedings in Polish criminal justice, evidence law, rights and obligations of crime victims, and combating human trafficking. Professor Kurowski's research bridges theoretical legal scholarship with practical application through his dual roles as academic and practicing prosecutor. His publications demonstrate consistent focus on improving criminal procedure mechanisms while balancing the rights of all parties involved in criminal cases.
Professor Kurowski has held several significant professional appointments beyond his academic position. From 2017-2018, he represented the National Prosecutor's Office in the Interministerial Team for Combating and Preventing Human Trafficking. He participated in the prestigious USA International Visitor Leadership Program focused on "Combating Human Trafficking for Forced Labor" in December 2019. Between March 2018 and December 2019, he served as the notified contact point for the European Network for the Investigation and Prosecution of Crimes against Humanity and War Crimes (Eurojust Structure). In 2008, he was appointed to the Expert Team by Professor Piotr Kruszyński, expert of the Standing Committee for Legislative Changes of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland.
At the University of Lodz, Professor Kurowski leads student scientific clubs and conducts specialized workshops on legal document preparation and process pleadings. His office hours are held on Thursdays from 6:00-7:00 PM via Teams platform and Saturdays from 9:30-10:00 AM in room 4:10. His professional trajectory reflects a dedicated commitment to advancing criminal justice through both scholarly contribution and practical legal application, making significant contributions to Polish criminal procedure law and human trafficking prevention efforts.
