Dr. Marek Smarzewski is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Criminal Procedure within the Faculty of Law, Canon Law and Administration at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin (KUL). Born in 1983, he earned his Master of Laws (2007) and Doctorate (2012) from KUL, with postgraduate studies in Computer Science. He joined KUL in 2011 as an assistant and was promoted to assistant professor in 2014. Since 2015, he has served as secretary of his department and coordinates the criminal section at KUL's Legal Clinic.
His research focuses on criminal procedure, cybercrime, human rights in justice systems, and comparative European law. Key interests include: defense rights, evidence admissibility, cyberterrorism legislation, restorative justice, and victim compensation frameworks. His work frequently examines intersections between Polish law and European legal standards.
Publications emphasize criminal procedure reforms, digital crimes, and human rights protections. Recent articles analyze judicial reforms, evidence law, and European Arrest Warrant procedures, reflecting his participation in EU research projects. He has authored monographs on passive crime subjects and cassation appeals.
Awards include the Rector's Individual Award (2019) for scientific and organizational achievements. He actively contributes to international projects like the EU Justice Programme on mutual recognition of arrest warrants. As a practicing attorney since 2018, he conducts legal training for prosecutors and disciplinary committees.
