Michalis Polychronakis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Stony Brook University, affiliated with the National Security Institute. He holds a B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Crete, Greece, where he worked at the Distributed Computing Systems Lab at FORTH-ICS. Prior to Stony Brook, he was an Associate Research Scientist at Columbia University.
His research focuses on enhancing network and systems security, developing defenses against malicious software and online threats, reinforcing online privacy, and analyzing the internet ecosystem's vulnerabilities. He has made significant contributions to memory safety, kernel protection, censorship measurement, and exploit mitigation techniques.
Key awards include the Marie Curie International Outgoing Fellowship (2010-2013), the Most Influential DIMVA Paper Award (2012), and the Best Paper Award at MALWARE 2011. His work spans compiler security, containerization security, and privacy-preserving protocols.
