Michal Kowalewski is a Professor and Curator of Invertebrate Paleontology at the University of Florida's Florida Museum of Natural History. He holds the Jon L. and Beverly A. Thompson Chair in Invertebrate Paleontology. His roles include academic leadership in geological sciences and interdisciplinary ecology. Kowalewski earned a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona and an M.S. from the University of Warsaw.
His research focuses on paleoecology, taphonomy, and marine conservation biology, with emphasis on understanding long-term ecological changes and human impacts. Key areas include mollusk and echinoid communities, seagrass ecosystems, and the fossil record's role in conservation. Major projects include studying Adriatic Sea ecosystem shifts and Florida freshwater spring biodiversity.
Notable achievements include being named a 2024 UF Research Foundation Professor and leading the Kowalewski Lab. Research has been funded by grants such as a National Science Foundation award for a Research Coordination Network in conservation paleobiology. He advises students like Luis Torres, a doctoral candidate in geological sciences.
Kowalewski’s work bridges paleontology and ecology, with contributions to understanding anthropogenic effects on marine communities. His studies combine fieldwork, lab analysis (e.g., geochemical signatures), and quantitative methods to assess ecological baselines and human-driven changes.
