Michaela Eder

Michaela Eder serves as a Research Group Leader in the Department of Biomaterials at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, Potsdam, Germany. She leads the Adaptive Fibrous Materials research group and has been actively involved in the Excellence Cluster "Matters of Activity" since 2019.

Her academic qualifications include:

• Doctoral thesis (2007) at BOKU - University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria (Department of Material Sciences and Process Engineering)
• Diploma in Wood Science and Technology (2003) from BOKU, Vienna

Dr. Eder's research centers on biomaterials with specialized expertise in wood science and fibrous structures. Her work investigates the hygro-mechanical behavior of natural materials, integrating experimental and computational micro-characterization techniques to develop adaptive material systems. This research bridges sustainable resource utilization with advanced engineering applications in bio-inspired design.

She has maintained continuous research leadership at the Max Planck Institute since 2004, progressing from research assistant to post-doctoral researcher and ultimately establishing her independent group in 2011. Her work is supported through institutional funding and collaborative projects including Excellence Clusters.

Her laboratory focuses on Adaptive Fibrous Materials within the Biomaterials department, with significant contributions to the COST Action FP0802 working group on wood mechanics (2008-2012) and ongoing interdisciplinary collaboration through the "Matters of Activity" Excellence Cluster.
