Michael Yamashita is an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba's Max Rady College of Medicine and a cardiac surgeon within the Department of Surgery. His research focuses on aortic disease, heart failure, and mechanical circulatory support, with clinical expertise in transcatheter therapies and complex thoracic aortic surgery.
- Education: MDCM from McGill University, MPH from Harvard University, and fellowships in aortic/endovascular surgery (Cleveland Clinic), advanced valve repair (Northwestern Memorial Hospital), and ventricular assist device/transplant surgery (University of British Columbia).
Dr. Yamashita leads the Manitoba Thoracic Aortic Diseases Clinic and co-directs the ECMO program's surgical heart failure initiatives. His research examines thoracic aortic disease epidemiology and outcomes in mechanical circulatory support patients, including roles as site principal investigator for the LAAOS III and SEARCH-AF randomized controlled trials.
His work intersects clinical outcomes post-cardiac surgery, device-based interventions for heart failure, and minimally invasive aortic procedures, reflecting expertise in both traditional and innovative cardiac surgical approaches.
