Dr Michael Woodiwiss is a Lecturer in History within the Department of ACE - Creative and Cultural Industries at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol). He has been a senior academic at UWE since 1996, previously teaching in American Studies at the University of Wales, Swansea. His work bridges history, criminology, and policy studies, focusing on organized crime, corporate crime, and international crime control.
His research interests include:
- Organized and corporate crime
- Corruption and crimes of the powerful
- Historical and interdisciplinary analysis of crime control
- International norm-making in crime policy
- US history and transnational crime
Dr Woodiwiss's recent publications and conference presentations examine the ideological dimensions of crime control, particularly how powerful interests shape narratives around organized crime. His work critically analyzes US-led crime policies and their global export, especially to small island developing states.
His notable scientific recognitions include:
- Distinguished Scholar Award, International Association for the Study of Organized Crime (2019)
- Fellow of the Royal Historical Society
He has supervised PhD and Master’s students on topics related to organized crime and welcomes new research students. He collaborates extensively with Dr Mary Alice Young (UWE Law) and has secured internal research funding for projects on Jamaica. He is active in professional networks, including the International Association for the Study of Organized Crime and the Socio Legal Studies Association, where he co-chairs the Organized Crime stream. He also serves on the editorial board of the European Review of Organised Crime.
