Michael Wolters is an Associate Professor in Composition at Birmingham City University (BCU), where he has been since 2004. He served as Deputy Head of Composition (2009) and currently leads the interdisciplinary MMus in Experimental Performance program, established in 2019. His work challenges traditional concert formats, blending music with theatre, performance art, and visual elements. Notable works include The Voyage (opera with unconventional instrumentation) and Spring Symphony: The Joy of Life (a 17-second symphony). Influenced by Laurie Anderson, he emphasizes interdisciplinary creativity across music, performance, and written word.
Wolters co-founded collectives like New Guide to Opera (2004–2012) and Difficult Listening (2017–). His research explores conceptual frameworks in art, prioritizing idea-driven creation over conventional structures. Education includes studies in Applied Theatre Studies at Justus Liebig University Giessen and Composition at the University of Huddersfield (BA, MA) and University of Birmingham (PhD).
