Michael Wilson

Michael Wilson, MPH, is an adjunct professor in the Department of Health Behavior at the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health. He serves as the South Africa country director and co-founder of Advance Access & Delivery (AA&D), a global health nonprofit focused on improving healthcare access for vulnerable communities. Based in Durban, South Africa, Wilson leads a team of over 30 staff and directs the Bellhaven Harm Reduction Center, South Africa’s first low-threshold harm reduction center. Since 2018, he has acted as a consultant to the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), supporting national tuberculosis and HIV programs.

Research Interests: Wilson’s work centers on global health challenges, including harm reduction strategies, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, overdose prevention, refugee health, and healthcare access for marginalized populations such as the urban poor, homeless individuals, and people who use drugs. His expertise spans infectious diseases, opioid substitution therapy, and prison health systems.

Labs/Teams: Wilson leads AA&D’s South Africa operations, including the Bellhaven Harm Reduction Center and initiatives like the Zero TB Initiative. He collaborates with institutions such as the Durban University of Technology on programs addressing healthcare during crises like the pandemic.
