معرفی
Michael Welsh, MD, is a Professor at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, holding appointments in Internal Medicine, Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, Neurology, and Neurosurgery. As director of the Pappajohn Biomedical Institute and a former Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator (1989–2024), his work bridges fundamental science and clinical innovation.
- Born and trained in Iowa, Welsh has dedicated over 40 years to studying cystic fibrosis (CF) and lung biology
- His research revealed the CFTR protein’s role as a chloride ion channel and developed mutation-specific therapies
Welsh’s discoveries enabled breakthroughs like Trikafta, a therapy addressing root causes of CF rather than symptoms. His work has transformed CF from a fatal condition to a manageable disease, impacting 90% of patients globally. Beyond CF, his studies on protein misfolding offer frameworks for treating Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and other disorders.
