Weibiao Cao, MD, MSc, is a Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Professor of Medicine at the Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University. He is a surgical pathologist at Lifespan Academic Medical Center with fellowship training in gastrointestinal pathology. His clinical expertise lies in anatomic pathology, GI pathology, and genitourinary pathology.
Education:
- MD, 1986 — Zhejiang Medical University, Hangzhou, China
- MSc, 1991 — Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, China
- Fellowship in GI Pathology, 2011–Present — Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Rhode Island Hospital
- Residency in Pathology, 2007–2011 — Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Rhode Island Hospital
Research Focus:
Dr. Cao’s research is centered on the molecular mechanisms underlying the progression from Barrett’s esophagus to esophageal adenocarcinoma. His work has identified the role of NADPH oxidase NOX5-S in acid-induced oxidative stress, DNA damage, and cell proliferation. He has also explored the role of bile acid receptor TGR5 in esophageal carcinogenesis and the impact of inflammatory mediators in ulcerative colitis and esophageal motility disorders.
Scientific Awards:
- Young Investigator Award Finalist, Lifespan – Rhode Island Hospital (2001)
- Young Investigator Award, American Motility Society (1998)
- Second Prize, National Scientific and Technological Advancement Award of China (1998)
- First Prize, Scientific Advancement Award, Ministry of Public Health, China (1997)
- First Prize, Academic Thesis, Peking Union Medical College Hospital (1994)
Grants & Funding:
Dr. Cao has served as Principal Investigator on multiple NIH-funded projects, including:
- NIH R01 DK080703: “NADPH oxidases-associated transition from Barrett's esophagus to adenocarcinoma”
