Brian Druker, M.D. is a pioneering cancer researcher and the president of the Knight Cancer Group at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). He revolutionized cancer treatment through research that resulted in Gleevec, the first drug to target the molecular defect of cancer while leaving healthy cells unharmed, transforming chronic myeloid leukemia from a fatal disease to a manageable condition. His work established the paradigm for precision medicine in oncology and has spurred development of more than 50 similar targeted therapies for other cancers.
Dr. Druker received his M.D. from the University of California San Diego in 1981, completed his residency at Barnes Hospital, Washington University, St. Louis, and a fellowship in medical oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (1984) and has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences, and American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Currently, Dr. Druker is applying precision medicine principles to early cancer detection, recognizing it as the greatest opportunity to increase cancer survival rates. With $1 billion in philanthropic funding starting in 2015, he developed a large-scale early detection program at OHSU's Knight Cancer Institute. In 2025, he launched an even more ambitious initiative with a historic $2 billion gift from the Knights to create a comprehensive cancer care model providing patients with innovative clinical trials and full-spectrum support services.
Analysis of Dr. Druker's recent publications reveals a strong focus on proteogenomics, acute myeloid leukemia, and molecular mechanisms of drug resistance. His research integrates multi-omics data with advanced computational methods to improve cancer diagnosis, predict treatment response, and identify new therapeutic targets. A notable trend is the application of deep learning to integrate histopathology with proteogenomic data for better cancer characterization and personalized treatment approaches.
