Michael V. Smith holds the E. Desmond Lee Endowed Professorship in Music Education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where he directs the E. Desmond Lee Fine Arts Education Collaborative and serves as Coordinator of Music Education. With a Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Minnesota, he has previously led music education programs at The Catholic University of America, DePaul University, Augustana College, and Ottawa University.
Smith's research focuses on mentoring programs for beginning music teachers and integrated arts instruction. He co-authored the 'Handbook for the Music Mentor' and has developed mentoring frameworks for organizations including Yamaha Corporation and the National Association of Pastoral Musicians. His interdisciplinary work explores technology-enhanced music pedagogy and cross-modal learning approaches, demonstrated through collaborations with institutions like the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Kreeger Museum.
Active as a clinician, conductor, and consultant, Smith maintains professional memberships in NAfME, MMEA, CMS, ASCD, and NPM. He continues to serve as church musician while advancing research in music education methodologies and community engagement strategies.
