Michael Underhill

Michael Underhill is a Professor in the Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences and the School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He holds a PhD in Microbiology & Immunology and a BSc in Genetics, both from the University of Western Ontario. His research focuses on skeletal development, particularly the molecular mechanisms underlying chondrogenesis and osteogenesis, with emphasis on retinoic acid receptor-mediated signaling pathways. Key areas include transcriptional networks for bone and cartilage formation, arthritis, and osteoporosis. His lab employs functional genomics and high-content screening to identify genes and pathways critical for skeletal cell differentiation. Recent work includes studies on Cyp26b1’s role in T-cell differentiation and the SS18-SSX fusion protein in synovial sarcomas.
