Arnold I. Caplan, PhD is a Professor at Case Western Reserve University with triple appointments in the Department of Biology (College of Arts and Sciences), Department of Pathology (School of Medicine), and Department of Biomedical Engineering (Case School of Engineering). He serves as Director of the Center for Modular Manufacturing of Structural Tissues and is a Member of the Immune Oncology Program at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Dr. Caplan's research primarily focuses on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and their applications in tissue engineering. His work centers on developing technologies to isolate MSCs and direct their differentiation into bone, cartilage, tendon, ligament, fat, and dermal cells. His research integrates principles of morphogenesis and organogenesis with growth factor control to advance skeletal tissue repair strategies. His laboratory investigates extracellular matrix production, chondrogenesis, and the metabolic requirements of differentiating stem cells.
Analysis of Dr. Caplan's recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on understanding the molecular mechanisms of MSC differentiation, particularly for cartilage and bone regeneration. His work spans multiple disciplines including molecular biology, tissue engineering, and biomedical engineering, with significant contributions to understanding miRNA regulation, metabolic requirements, and extracellular matrix production during chondrogenesis. His research increasingly incorporates advanced techniques like transcriptome analysis and biosensor development.
Dr. Caplan has made substantial contributions to the field of regenerative medicine, particularly in establishing foundational knowledge about mesenchymal stem cell biology and their therapeutic applications. His work bridges basic science with clinical translation, focusing on developing innovative tissue engineering approaches for skeletal repair.
As Director of the Center for Modular Manufacturing of Structural Tissues, Dr. Caplan leads research efforts focused on developing scalable and reproducible methods for tissue engineering. His laboratory integrates multiple approaches including molecular biology, biomechanics, and advanced imaging to develop functional tissue replacements.
