Dr. Michael Tymkiw is a Reader (equivalent to Associate Professor) in the School of Philosophical, Historical, and Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Essex, specializing in modern and contemporary visual culture with particular focus on spectatorship. He teaches courses including Collect, Curate, Display: A Short History of the Museum; Contemporary Art: 1945 until Now; and Practical Skills for Curatorial Work, while maintaining regular academic support hours on Tuesdays.
His educational background includes a PhD in Art History and an MBA (with honors) from the University of Chicago, plus a BA in French (cum laude) from Yale University. Before joining Essex, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz--Max Planck Institut.
Tymkiw's research centers on three interconnected areas: Nazi exhibition design and modernism, walking on art from the 1920s to present, and intersections between digital technologies and spectatorship. His work examines how exhibition design serves as a field for formal experimentation, how floor-based artworks engage bodily movement, and how digital tools can reshape museum experiences. He approaches these topics through interdisciplinary methods combining art historical analysis with empirical research techniques.
His publications from 2006-2025 reveal a consistent focus on spectatorship across diverse contexts, evolving from Nazi-era exhibitions to contemporary walkable art and digital museum experiences. Recent work increasingly incorporates empirical methodologies while maintaining strong art historical foundations, with publications spanning traditional art history journals and interdisciplinary science publications.
He currently serves as Field Editor for Twentieth-Century Art at caa.reviews and is a member of the Editorial Board for the journal Art History.
Tymkiw actively supervises doctoral research, currently guiding six PhD candidates in Art History, Curating, and History, with four previous students having successfully completed their degrees. His supervision spans diverse topics within visual culture, exhibition history, and curatorial practice, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach.
His research connects academic inquiry with practical applications in museum settings, particularly through his investigations of how digital technologies can enhance accessibility and critical engagement with art collections.
