Michael Tiemeyer is a Research Professor at the University of Georgia and Joint Director of the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center and the Center for Molecular Medicine Education. His research focuses on the role of cell-surface carbohydrates in biological processes.
- Education: Ph.D. in Neuroscience (1989) and B.A. in Biology (1982) from Johns Hopkins University.
Research Interests: His work spans three core areas:
- Cancer Biology: Investigating carbohydrate markers in tumor metastasis.
- Developmental Biology: Studying neural development through the carbohydrate-binding protein Gliolectin.
- Glycobiology: Exploring tissue-specific glycosylation mechanisms mediated by Toll-like receptors like Tollo.
Laboratory: The Tiemeyer Lab employs genetic, molecular, and chemical techniques in vertebrate (mouse) and insect (Drosophila) models to uncover principles applicable to axon regeneration, innate immunity, and cancer pathogenesis.
