Michael T. Berton

Michael T. Berton is a Professor and Deputy Chair in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics within the Long School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He additionally serves as Director of the Integrated Biomedical Sciences PhD Program and Scientific Director of the UT Health San Antonio Flow Cytometry Core Facility.

His educational background includes:

• PhD in Microbiology & Immunology (1985), University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, TN
• BS in Biology (1978), Rhodes College, Memphis, TN
• Postdoctoral Fellowship in Immunology, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX

Dr. Berton's research centered on host cell signaling pathways regulating innate and adaptive immune responses, with seminal contributions to understanding IL-4/CD40 signaling in immunoglobulin class switching and novel regulatory mechanisms in Toll-Like Receptor (TLR) signaling during pathogen infection. After 25 years leading an extramurally funded research program, he transitioned to administrative and educational leadership roles.

He currently directs critical institutional resources including the Flow Cytometry Core Facility and the Integrated Biomedical Sciences PhD Program, shaping graduate education and research infrastructure at UT Health San Antonio.
