Michael Snyder is the Stanford W. Ascherman Professor of Genetics and Chair of the Department of Genetics at Stanford University School of Medicine. He serves as Director of the Center for Genomics and Personalized Medicine (2009-Present) and holds affiliations with Stanford Bio-X, Cardiovascular Institute, Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance, Maternal & Child Health Research Institute, and Stanford Cancer Institute. Previously, he was faculty at Yale University's Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology (1986-2009).
Education includes:
- B.A. in Chemistry and Biology from University of Rochester (1977)
- Ph.D. from California Institute of Technology (1982)
- Postdoctoral training at Stanford University School of Medicine (1986)
His research focuses on developing and applying multi-omics approaches including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and microbiome analysis to understand human health and disease. Key areas include:
- Genome annotation and transcriptome complexity
- Transcription factor binding networks
- Integrated regulatory networks
- Genetic variation and structural variation
- Application of omics technologies to human disease diagnostics and therapeutics
Research articles demonstrate strong focus on metabolic subphenotyping (especially diabetes), cancer mechanisms, aging biomarkers, and precision medicine approaches using wearable devices and machine learning. Recent work emphasizes non-linear biomolecular changes during aging and personalized disease risk prediction.
Scientific honors include:
- Pioneer Award, Precision Medicine World Conference (2025)
- George Beadle Award (2019)
- Election to American Academy of Science (2015)
- Stanford B. Ascherman Professorship (2011)
- Human Proteome Organization Pioneer Award (2009)
Directs the Snyder Lab researching omics technologies and personalized medicine. Current clinical trials investigate metabolic therapies, microbiome interactions, and digital health interventions. Mentors graduate students in Biomedical Data Science, Genetics, and Immunology programs at Stanford.
