Michael Serra is an Associate Professor and Learning Specialist in the Department of Medical Education at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, with a secondary appointment as Associate Professor of Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Texas Tech University. His research spans cognitive psychology, memory, metacognition, learning, and functional neuroimaging, focusing on how people evaluate their own learning and how educators can optimize study behaviors. Recognized as a 2023 Integrated Scholar at Texas Tech University, he integrates research, teaching, and service through active learning strategies and curriculum innovation.
Serra investigates memory processes, metacognitive judgments, and learning efficiency across educational contexts—from elementary reading comprehension to college-level scientific diagram interpretation. His work bridges laboratory research with real-world applications, including collaborations with artists exploring episodic memory reconstruction through dance and analyses of memory portrayal in popular media like The Mandalorian. He emphasizes critical thinking as a foundational skill that enables students to adapt knowledge beyond surface-level content acquisition.
Serra has received the following honors:
- 2023 Integrated Scholar at Texas Tech University
His teaching philosophy centers on developing lifelong information literacy through evidence-based study techniques. He incorporates 'behind-the-scenes' research insights into pedagogy, demonstrating how cognitive principles apply across disciplines. Serra actively translates memory science for public audiences through university library lecture series, arts symposia, and media interviews, notably examining memory malleability in film and television narratives. He collaborates extensively with interdisciplinary teams, including a dance-based exploration of reconstructive memory processes with the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts.
