Michael Schreffler is Professor of Art History at the University of Notre Dame and serves as the Associate Dean for the Arts in the College of Arts and Letters. His scholarship focuses on Spanish colonial art and architectural history, examining how objects, images, and buildings communicated ideas and supported governance in the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spanish Empire.

Schreffler's research investigates the intersections of art, architecture, and power in the Spanish viceroyalties of Peru and New Spain. He explores how visual and material culture shaped colonial identities, religious practices, and administrative authority across Andean South America, Mexico, the southwestern United States, and the Philippine Islands. His work contributes to the broader fields of visual culture, historiography, and the study of art and language in the early modern Iberian world.
