Michael Sargent is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Bates College, where he also serves as a Psychology Department Co-Chair. His research bridges social psychology and political psychology, focusing on how collective identities shape policy attitudes, particularly regarding race, ethnicity, and social cognition.

His research explores racial identity's role in political attitudes, including studies on paying college athletes, regulating racist speech, and racial stereotypes in rural vs. urban settings. Collaborations with economists and education scholars highlight his interdisciplinary approach to political psychology and intergroup relations.
Recent work examines how racial identity intersects with sports policy and political protest attitudes. Earlier studies connected cognitive styles (need for cognition) to punitive crime policies and analyzed implicit bias in legal evaluations. Publications span journals like Group Processes & Intergroup Relations, Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, and Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.
