Michael S. Chapman is a Professor and Division Director/Chair in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Missouri, jointly appointed in the School of Medicine and College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. He specializes in structural biology, focusing on Adeno-Associated Virus (AAV) interactions with host proteins for gene therapy applications.
- Research Focus: Structural virology, enzyme dynamics, cryo-EM, and computational methods development
- Key Contributions: Discovery of the AAV receptor (AAVR), high-resolution AAV capsid structures, and advanced EM refinement algorithms
His work combines biophysical and molecular approaches with cryo-EM, X-ray crystallography, and NMR. Recent projects include elucidating AAV-2 and AAV-5 receptor-binding modes, redefining antibody neutralization mechanisms, and developing resolution-dependent EM refinement tools. While no formal student list is provided, his lab accepts graduate trainees from diverse backgrounds.
