Professor Michael S. Brady is a prominent academic in philosophy at the University of Glasgow, affiliated with the Department of Philosophy within the College of Arts & Humanities. He holds the title of Professor of Philosophy and is set to become Dean of Research for the College of Arts & Humanities starting September 2025.
Education: PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara; MA from King's College, University of London; BA (Hons) from the University of Liverpool. Professional roles include previous Head of School of Humanities (2019–2023) and Deputy Head of the College of Arts & Humanities. He serves on the editorial boards of The Philosophical Quarterly and Oxford Bibliographies Online.
Research focuses on the philosophy of emotion, epistemic value, suffering, virtue, and post-traumatic growth. Key projects include leading the Templeton Foundation-funded 'Value of Suffering' interdisciplinary initiative (2013–2016) and a Leverhulme Fellowship on 'Philosophy of Post-Traumatic Growth' (2023–2025). Recent grants include a Templeton World Charity Foundation award (2024–2027) exploring confession and flourishing.
Teaching includes courses on moral philosophy, epistemology, and applied ethics. Collaborates with the theatre company Quarantine through his role as Philosopher-in-Residence, blending philosophical inquiry with performance art.
Supervision of PhD students includes work on Stoic ethics, virtue theory, and moral philosophy. Extensive editorial contributions include co-editing volumes on pain, suffering, and virtue epistemology.
