Dr. Michael Räckers is the Managing Director of the Institute for Business Information Systems at the University of Münster, part of the School of Business and Economics. He holds an Associate Professorship in Information Systems and has led the department since 2013. His research focuses on E-Government, public sector process optimization, and digital transformation. Räckers earned his Dr. rer. pol. from the University of Münster in 2010, with a thesis on domain-specific process management in public administration.
He has extensive experience in academic and administrative roles, including Head of the Competence Center E-Government at ERCIS and Deputy Member of various university committees. His work emphasizes bridging theory and practice in information systems, particularly through projects like the eGov Campus for public sector training and the PIONEER Master’s program in Public Sector Innovation.
Räckers has authored over 50 publications and led numerous research projects funded by EU, German federal and state bodies. His awards include Outstanding Paper Awards from the International Conference on Information Systems (2011) and the IADIS e-Society Conference (2008). He teaches courses on IT law, public services, and information systems application, and actively supervises student research projects in process management and digital governance.
Key contributions include developing methods for process modeling in public administration, analyzing digital competency gaps, and advancing federal information management. His involvement in initiatives like the Stanford Design Thinking Project and the EU-funded EQUAL-IST gender equality program highlights his interdisciplinary approach to academic leadership and societal impact.
