Dr. Michael Roberts serves as an R&D Manager at Bangor University's School of Physical Sciences, where he previously worked as a Research Officer. His academic career spans over 15 years of research in marine energy systems, seabed morphology, and maritime archaeology.
Roberts' research interests focus on Marine Energy, Tidal Energy Systems, Seabed Morphology, and Maritime Archaeology. His work bridges scientific investigation with practical applications for renewable energy development and underwater cultural heritage preservation. He has conducted extensive research on the Irish Sea's tidal energy potential and marine energy test areas in Wales, while also contributing to significant maritime archaeological discoveries.
His recent publications demonstrate a clear trend toward interdisciplinary research connecting marine energy development with environmental considerations and historical maritime heritage. Roberts has made notable contributions to understanding how marine energy infrastructure interacts with seabed environments and how historical shipwrecks can be discovered and studied.
Roberts actively contributes to research projects including bathymetry surveys of sub-tidal sandbanks in southwest Wales, the UNPATH maritime collections project, and multiple CEFAS noise monitoring projects. He also participates in community engagement through events like the Coastal Communities Community Event in 2024.
