Dr. Michael R. Lowe is a Professor of Clinical Psychology in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Drexel University. He holds a PhD from Boston College and directs the Biobehavioral Study of Eating and Weight laboratory, focusing on obesity, eating disorders, and weight management.
Research Focus: Lowe investigates eating behaviors, weight suppression, and hedonic hunger mechanisms. He developed the Power of Food Scale and examines why psychological treatments for obesity have seen limited improvement over decades. His work explores physiological and behavioral determinants of weight regain, dieting effects, and biological-environmental interactions.
Publications: Recent articles examine infant weight variability predictors, food restriction debates, and longitudinal predictors of disordered eating. Neuroimaging studies investigate prefrontal activation patterns related to eating behaviors.
Professional Activities: Dr. Lowe serves as research consultant to the Renfrew Center for eating disorders and is principal investigator on the NIH-funded POWERS study.
