Michael Prodger

Michael Prodger serves as a Senior Research Fellow in the History of Modern Art at the University of Buckingham's School of Humanities and Social Sciences, where he also directs the Humanities Research Institute's London MA programme in History of Art: Renaissance to Modernism.

His academic foundation includes:

• BA in History of Art from the Courtauld Institute of Art
• PhD in History of Art (focusing on Baron Gros and Napoleonic Painting) from the Courtauld Institute of Art

Prodger's research spans the full trajectory of Western art history with concentrated expertise in Modern Art and the critical transition from Renaissance to Modernist movements. His doctoral specialization in Napoleonic-era French painting informs his broader scholarly perspective on 19th-century artistic developments and their legacy.

As an active cultural commentator, Prodger holds the position of art critic for Standpoint magazine while contributing to major publications including the Sunday Times, Financial Times, Guardian, and Spectator. His professional background includes serving as Literary Editor for the Sunday Telegraph, and he has lent his expertise as a judge for prestigious literary awards such as the Man Booker Prize, Samuel Johnson Prize, David Cohen Prize, and Costa Book Awards.

In his capacity as Course Director, Prodger oversees the academic framework and pedagogical approach for the MA programme in History of Art, shaping graduate education in art historical studies at the University of Buckingham.
