Simon Heffer is a Professorial Research Fellow at the University of Buckingham's Faculty of Business, Humanities and Social Sciences, specializing in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (Economics and International Studies). Born in 1960, he studied English at King Edward VI School, Chelmsford, and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. A prominent historian and biographer, his work focuses on British political and cultural history, particularly the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
His notable publications include biographies of Thomas Carlyle, Ralph Vaughan Williams, King Edward VII, and Enoch Powell (for which he earned a PhD in modern history from Cambridge). Recent works include Staring at God – Britain 1914 to 1919 (2019) and The Age of Decadence – Britain 1880 to 1914. He is currently editing the complete diaries of Sir Henry 'Chips' Channon, published from 2021.
Heffer’s research explores themes like political power, cultural shifts, and historical biography. His articles span British history from the Victorian era to the early 20th century, emphasizing social dynamics and intellectual movements. He has held roles as deputy editor of The Spectator and The Daily Telegraph, and continues writing for the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph.
