Dr Michael Priestley is a Lecturer in the School of Education at Durham University, joining in 2024. His research focuses on student mental health and wellbeing in higher education, postmodern educational philosophy, and critical educational psychology. He holds a PhD, MA, and BA in Education from Durham University (2013–2022). Prior to Durham, he was a Research Associate at King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Neuroscience.
Michael’s work integrates educational philosophy, political sociology, and health psychology to advocate for whole-university mental health approaches in neoliberal contexts. He collaborates with organizations like the Charlie Waller Trust (Youth Involvement Coordinator) and Student Minds (Assessor for the University Mental Health Charter). His research emphasizes participatory methodologies and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Michael has presented at major conferences including the UKRI Student Mental Health Research Network, Universities UK Mental Health in Higher Education Conference, and Times Higher Education Live Awards. His publications address student wellbeing challenges, staff-student wellbeing interdependence, and pandemic impacts on education.
He teaches on BA/MA Education Studies programs and actively contributes to policy debates through his research on assessment pressures, social relationships in universities, and mental health service improvements.
