Dr. Michael Plouffe is an Associate Professor of International Political Economy at University College London's School of Public Policy. He joined UCL in 2013 after earning his PhD from the University of California, San Diego. His research focuses on the intersections of domestic and international political economy, including trade policy, monetary policy, institutional quality, and East Asian political economy. He has held roles such as Deputy Director of the BSc Politics, Philosophy, and Economics program and Director of the Affiliate Program in Political Science and International Relations.
Plouffe's education includes a PhD (2013) and MA (2009) in International Relations from UC San Diego, alongside a BA in International Studies and Economics (2007). His research spans analytical political economy topics like firm heterogeneity, trade policy, and macroprudential policies, with regional emphases on East Asia and the US.
His most recent articles analyze corporate lobbying in free trade agreements, MNC corruption risk, and UK-China trade dynamics. He has received awards including the 2024 Departmental Teaching Award and the 2007-2008 Edmund G. Brown Sr. Fellowship. His teaching includes undergraduate modules on International Political Economy and the Political Economy of East Asia.
