Michael Pearson is an Assistant Professor of Instruction at the School of Journalism and Media, The University of Texas at Austin. He brings over 24 years of journalism experience in print, broadcast, and digital media, with a focus on investigative reporting and newsroom leadership. Pearson has held leadership roles at major news organizations including KSAT-TV, News 8 Austin, and the Hearst Washington Bureau.
Education:
- Bachelor's in Journalism, Texas State University (1978)
Research Interests: Investigative journalism methodologies, broadcast newsroom dynamics, media accountability, and ethical reporting practices. His career has emphasized exposing systemic corruption in law enforcement, judiciary systems, and political entities.
Awards & Recognition: Recipient of the Sigma Delta Chi Bronze Medallion for 9/11 coverage, Edward R. Murrow Award for child abuse reporting, and Texas Gavel Award for judicial corruption investigations.
Leadership & Impact: Spearheaded newsroom transformations at KSAT-TV (San Antonio) and News 8 Austin, leading to ratings improvements. Established Capital Tonight, a flagship Texas politics program. Trained in newsroom leadership at the Poynter Institute and Carole Kneeland Project.
Labs/Teams: Former leadership of the San Antonio Light's award-winning Special Projects Team and investigative units at the Caller-Times and Express-News. Current focus on educating future journalists through UT Austin's School of Journalism and Media.
