Michael P. Milham

Michael P. Milham, MD, PhD is the Chief Science Officer and founding Director of the Center for the Developing Brain at the Child Mind Institute, an independent non-profit devoted to children’s mental health. He also serves as Director of the Healthy Brain Network and as Senior Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist at the Institute’s Psychopharmacology Center. Previously, he held faculty appointments at NYU Langone Medical Center (Leon Levy Assistant Professor, Department of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry) and at the Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research (Director, Center for Biomedical Imaging & Neuromodulation).

Research Focus: Dr. Milham’s program integrates large-scale neuroimaging, open-data consortia, and clinical practice to understand how functional and structural brain connectivity shape the emergence of mental illness across development. He pioneered the 1000 Functional Connectomes Project and its International Neuroimaging Data-Sharing Initiative (INDI), and founded the community resources ADHD-200, ABIDE, CoRR, and the Rockland Sample. These initiatives have generated freely shared datasets from more than 15,000 participants worldwide.

Honors & Recognition:

• Named to the Clarivate/Web of Science Highly Cited Researchers list every year since 2014, placing him in the top 1 % of neuroscience citations globally.
• Recipient of the 2014 Wiley Young Investigator Award from the Organization for Human Brain Mapping.

Clinical & Translational Impact: Beyond research, Dr. Milham maintains an active clinical practice treating children, adolescents, and adults with psychiatric disorders. He champions Next Generation Disruptive Technologies (NGDT) to democratize access to precision mental-health care and accelerate discovery across the field.

Laboratories & Teams: At the Child Mind Institute he leads the Center for the Developing Brain, a multidisciplinary team of imaging scientists, data engineers, and clinicians. Parallel leadership roles include the Healthy Brain Network (10,000-participant community cohort) and the Nathan Kline Institute Rockland Sample (lifespan mapping, ages 6–85).
