Michael Nonnemacher, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology and Director of the Division of Biomedical Sciences at Drexel University College of Medicine. He holds additional roles including Program Director of the Microbiology & Immunology graduate program and Director of the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program. Nonnemacher's research focuses on HIV-1 pathogenesis, gene-editing strategies for cure, neuroAIDS, and HBV/HIV coinfection impacts. His work is funded by NIH and NINDS grants, emphasizing HIV cure research and molecular virology. He has mentored numerous graduate students and contributed to over 50 peer-reviewed publications.
Education includes a PhD from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine (2004) and BS from Duquesne University (1996). Notable recognitions include nominations for the Julian Marsh Faculty Scholar Award and Elias Abrutyn Mentoring Award. His lab collaborates with institutions like Temple University and Case Western Reserve on CRISPR-based therapies targeting HIV latency. Key research themes include viral quasispecies analysis via Nanopore sequencing and understanding Tat protein's role in CNS dysfunction.
Nonnemacher leads the Drexel CARES Cohort, studying longitudinal HIV patients to identify diagnostic markers for neurocognitive decline. He also investigates drug abuse effects on BBB integrity and HBV/HIV synergy in cancer progression. His team develops computational tools like HIV-Quasipore and HIV-BERT for viral sequence analysis, advancing both basic science and translational applications.
