Michael Mulvihill is a Research Fellow at the Institute for Collective Place Leadership, Teesside University, affiliated with SACI - Research & Innovation. He conducts interdisciplinary research at the nexus of human geography, critical military studies, and creative practice, focusing on nuclear deterrent systems, space surveillance, and socio-technical phenomena.
His research interests center on embodied knowledge, more-than-human interactions, and the geopolitical implications of space and nuclear technologies. Using post-qualitative and critical-creative methodologies, he investigates how tacit sensorial knowledge from sites like RAF Fylingdales shapes regional identities, economies, and technopolitical landscapes in Northeast England.
His recent publications reveal a strong focus on themes such as entanglement, bunkers, dead space, and the cultural geographies of military infrastructure. He employs creative methods to make visible the hidden practices of ballistic missile early warning and space monitoring, contributing to public understanding through documentaries and media engagement.
