Professor Millward is an internationally recognized expert in thoracic malignancies and melanoma management, with extensive experience in developing liquid biomarkers (CTCs, ctDNA) for melanoma in collaboration with Edith Cowan University. His research interests focus on clinical and pharmacological aspects of anti-cancer treatments, with particular emphasis on developing and introducing promising new agents into clinical research in Australia. He is currently the Western Australia lead for the MoST pan-cancer and ASPiRATION lung cancer trials, which are expanding molecular testing nationwide.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on biomarker development, immunotherapy response prediction, and targeted therapies for melanoma and lung cancer. The research shows increasing sophistication in molecular profiling approaches, particularly in liquid biopsy techniques for monitoring treatment response and disease progression.
- Fellow of Edith Cowan University (2017)
- Cancer Council WA Career Achievement Award (2017)
- Cancer Council NSW Career Achievement Award (2017)
Professor Millward has successfully supervised numerous research projects and clinical trials, securing significant grant funding including the MRFF Genomic Health Futures Mission grant (2021-2025) and the CCWA Cancer Foundation Chair in Clinical Cancer Research (2019-2024). He has established strong collaborative networks both within Australia and internationally, serving on multiple scientific committees including Thoracic Oncology Group Australasia and the Genomic Cancer Clinical Trials Initiative. His leadership extends to setting up monthly cancer education meetings for oncologists in Perth since 2005 and contributing to major conferences including the 2013 World Lung Cancer Conference in Sydney.
He directs research activities through multiple platforms including the Western Australian Kirkbride Melanoma Advisory Service (where he serves as Deputy Director) and the WA Comprehensive Cancer Centre Steering Group, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration between clinicians, pathologists, and basic scientists to advance cancer treatment.
