Michael Meranze is Professor and Vice Chair for Undergraduate Affairs in History at UCLA. He holds a PhD from UC Berkeley and specializes in early American intellectual and legal history, with emphasis on penal systems and revolutionary violence.
Research Focus
His scholarship explores contradictions between Enlightenment ideals and institutional practices, notably in penitentiary development and capital punishment. Current projects examine violence in the Revolutionary Atlantic and historical evolution of the death penalty.
