Simon Grivet is a Lecturer at the University of Lille, affiliated with the Faculty of Languages, Culture and Societies, Department of English Studies (Angellier). He is a member of ULR 4074 - Center for Studies in Civilizations, Languages and Foreign Literature, and an alumnus of EHESS (Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales) and CENA (Centre d'études nord-américaines).
His research focuses primarily on American Legal and Constitutional History, with particular expertise in the history of justice, the history of the American South, death penalty studies, and regional histories of California and Alabama. His work demonstrates a consistent focus on the evolution of capital punishment in American history, examining it through multiple lenses including constitutional law, social justice, and regional political contexts.
Grivet's publications reveal a strong analytical approach to the historical development of the death penalty in the United States, with particular attention to California's legal history throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. His work spans from early American constitutional debates about cruel and unusual punishment to contemporary analyses of the January 6th Capitol insurrection, demonstrating both chronological breadth and thematic consistency in examining American justice systems.
His methodological approach combines traditional historical analysis with legal scholarship, examining court decisions, legislative developments, and social movements that have shaped American penal practices. The recurring themes in his work include racial justice implications of capital punishment, the tension between constitutional principles and practical implementation of the death penalty, and the evolving public discourse surrounding state-sanctioned execution.
