Professor Michael McDonnell is a leading scholar of Early American History at the University of Sydney's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He holds a BA from the University of Ottawa and a DPhil from Balliol College, Oxford. His research focuses on Indigenous experiences of empire, the American Revolution, and Revolutionary War memoirs. He collaborates widely, including with Kate Fullagar on comparative Indigenous studies and with Clare Corbould on Black American perspectives of the Revolution.
Key projects include Facing Empire: Indigenous Experiences in a Revolutionary Age and Masters of Empire: Great Lakes Indians and the Making of America. He has secured major grants such as the ARC’s 'Facing New Worlds' and 'War Stories' projects. His work emphasizes decolonizing perspectives and interdisciplinary approaches.
McDonnell is a member of the Vere Gordon Childe Centre and actively contributes to public history through podcasts like History Matters and digital initiatives. His research bridges colonial and postcolonial studies, offering critical insights into power dynamics, memory, and nation-building.
