Associate Professor Michael Matthew Kasumovic is a faculty member at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Faculty of Science, conducting research on how social environments shape evolutionary traits and behaviors across species. His office is located in Room 5105, Level 5 West, Biological Sciences South (E26), UNSW, Kensington 2052.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Evolutionary Biology from the University of Toronto (2007)
- M.Sc. in Ecology from Queen's University (2002)
- B.Sc. in Biology from McMaster University (2000)
Dr. Kasumovic's research examines how ecological and social environments affect developmental decisions, mating strategies, and aging processes. He uses crickets to study juvenile developmental decisions and their impact on adult phenotypes, while his spider research investigates how ecological environments affect sex ratios and mating strategies. His human-focused work, conducted in collaboration with Tom Denson from Psychology, explores how evolutionary history explains gender differences in video game preferences and behaviors.
His scientific contributions have been recognized with multiple prestigious awards:
- UNSW Faculty of Science Early Career Researcher Award (2012)
- Life Science & Biological Sciences Scopus Young Research of the Year (2012)
- American Society of Naturalists Young Investigator Prize (2011)
- NSW Young Tall Poppy Science Award Winner (2010)
Dr. Kasumovic has secured significant research funding through the Hermon Slade Foundation (2012-2015), ARC Discovery Early Career Research Award (2012-2014), ARC Discovery Grant (2012-2014), ARC Postdoctoral Fellowship (2008-2011), and NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship (2007-2009). His work bridges laboratory experiments with field studies and online surveys, contributing to 77 journal articles, 8 conference papers, and 14 preprints.
