Associate Professor Michael Kasumovic, affiliated with the School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of New South Wales, integrates evolutionary biology and behavioral ecology in his research. His work examines how social and ecological environments shape individual traits, behaviors, and aging across diverse species—from insects and spiders to humans. He holds a Ph.D. in Evolutionary Biology from the University of Toronto (2007), an M.Sc. in Ecology from Queen’s University (2002), and a B.Sc. in Biology from McMaster University (2000).
His research spans three primary domains:
- Evolutionary mechanisms in spiders and insects, particularly focusing on sexual selection and developmental plasticity
- Human behavior studies linking evolutionary history to video game preferences and social dynamics
- Interdisciplinary collaborations merging biology with psychology and material science
Recent publications highlight his innovative approach to game-based learning, cognitive assessments for aging populations, and meta-analyses on sexual selection. His grants include
- Hermon Slade Foundation (2012-2015)
- ARC Discovery Early Career Research Award (2012-2014)
- ARC Postdoctoral Fellowship (2008-2011)
Scientific accolades reflect his impact:
- UNSW Early Career Researcher Award (2012)
- Scopus Young Researcher of the Year (2012)
- American Society of Naturalists Young Investigator (2011)
- NSW Young Tall Poppy Science Award (2010)
