Dr Michael Mansfield is an Assistant Professor in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy at the University of Birmingham, School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences. He holds a PhD in Health Sciences from the University of East Anglia and is a Fellow of Advance HE (FHEA), with over 20 years of clinical and academic experience across NHS, independent, and academic sectors.

He leads the ALIGN (Arthroplasty & Orthopaedics Interdisciplinary Group for Evidence & Outcomes) research network and serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Pain and Rehabilitation, the journal of the Physiotherapy Pain Association. His work investigates pain phenotypes, psychosocial influences on recovery, health inequalities, and rehabilitation equity, particularly in spinal and joint conditions.
The most recent articles reflect a strong trend in systematic reviews and meta-analyses focused on predicting pain recurrence, psychosocial predictors of musculoskeletal pain, and methodological investigations into pain modulation mechanisms. His publications span high-impact journals such as BMJ Open, PLoS ONE, and European Journal of Pain, demonstrating a consistent interdisciplinary and evidence-based approach.
