Michael Loftus is a dual-role academic and clinical professional, serving as a Research Fellow at the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Monash University and as a Consultant Physician in the Department of Infectious Diseases at the Alfred Hospital. His work bridges clinical practice and research, focusing on the intersection of climate change and human health, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and epidemiology.
- Graduated in medicine from Monash University (2011)
- PhD in Antimicrobial Resistance in the Pacific Island Countries and Territories (2022)
Research interests center on climate change impacts on health, AMR in low-resource settings, and healthcare sustainability. His publications highlight collaborations across Pacific Island nations, Fiji, and Australia, with a focus on bacterial infections, epidemiological modeling, and healthcare policy. He contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly climate action and global health equity.
Current projects include the PEACH study (2025–2026), aimed at evidence-based climate health interventions. Michael is a member of the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases (ASID) and the Australian Society for Antimicrobials (ASA), with over 20 publications in high-impact journals like The Lancet and its regional editions.
